Lenses
Choosing the right prescription lenses is not as easy as it once was. New technology has introduced many choices in materials, designs, and lens treatments that have not been available in the past. At Hamilton Eyecare Center, it is our goal to inform you about the different options so that you can make the best decision regarding your eyeglass lenses.
There are many choices in materials from which the lenses are made. High index lenses can make lenses lighter weight and thinner. Some lens materials are also more impact resistant. Our opticians are trained to help you choose the best lenses for your needs.
Lens design technology has drastically changed over the last several years. “Digital freeform” technology or “high-definition” lenses can be customized for the frame size, tilt, wrap, and distance from the eye to create exceptional vision even in the peripheral portion of the lenses.
Anti-reflection coatings on lenses reduce glare, especially at night. The newer anti-reflection coatings also resist scratches and smudges, protect against damaging UV light, and actually repel dust and water. One coating is specifically for use with computers. These anti-reflection lenses come with a 2 year warranty as well. (See Crizal website.) Our opticians can make recommendations for the anti-reflection coating that is best for you.
Photochromic lenses – ones that change when exposed to light – is an option many people consider. Newer technology allows for the lenses to change more quickly when going from dark to bright conditions and quickly return to clear when in ordinary indoor lighting or at night. (See Transition website.)
Sunglasses not only reduce the brightness of the sun, but can also protect against the damaging effects of UV light. Polarized lenses are an excellent choice for sunglasses because they also diminish glare from flat reflective surfaces, like water and snow.
Eyeglass lenses for presbyopia, those in which the lens inside their eye has lost some or all of its ability to focus, can be particularly challenging. At Hamilton Eyecare Center, our doctors and opticians can help you determine the best lens for your needs.
